Personality:
The first thing that anyone has to understand about Eric is that he's old. He's over 1,000 so there isn't much that he hasn't seen or done. That lends nonchalance to him that can often be seen as flat. There's nothing flat about Eric's personality. He does spend a good deal of his time bored. He considers humans and their very short lives beneath him. He is entirely in support of mainstreaming (humans and vampires living together peacefully) and does not approve of killing humans when feeding upon them. Killing them because they've wronged him is an entirely different story. I believe he views them very much the way humans view dogs or cats. Some of them are dangerous, some of them are annoying and a select few of them are beloved. It's a very small selection and in Eric's case, there is no beloved human at all. Sookie is part fairy; that places her above humans on Eric's superiority scale—yes he does think vampires are superior to humans. Humans for Eric are a means to continue the life he has both literally in terms of drinking their blood and as a means to make money through his vampire-human club, Fangtasia. They're also occasionally entertaining.
For a vampire, Eric is incredibly loyal. This is seen in his relationship with Pam. Of course, he picks whom he is loyal to, but he's loyal. He doesn't like Bill, in fact there are times he hates him but he's loyal to the king of his region. Later, he’s got no qualms about killing him or leaving him to die, even when some vampires regard him as the vampire messiah. Gods (little or big g) don’t impress Eric. He’s seen too many of them fall. He's protective of those he's loyal to or those he thinks can benefit him. He protects Lafayette, not because he cares about him, but because he is beneficial to his business. He tells Sookie at one time that her brother is only alive because of her.
Eric loves power, but he doesn't want total power. It's too much responsibility and not enough fun. He likes being the oldest vampire in his world (he killed the others or they were killed) and he likes the power that gives him both physically and otherwise. The fact that he is the oldest vampire in canon also points out that he is a survivor. Eric will do what he has to survive and even thrive regardless of how it conflicts with some of his emotions and ideals. For example, he loves Sookie, but he will use her power even against her will to stay alive and gain the upper hand. He can be cruel, but it's not him so much as it is his will to survive. He doesn't enjoy cruelty. This is exhibited most clearly when he returns to the prison/lab to release the other vampires. At this point he loathes humans, but he doesn’t participate in the torture that the other vampires are participating in. He kills relatively quickly (for the most part) if viciously (he did tear a scientist’s dick off and let him bleed to death so…) What he does enjoy is a fight. He doesn’t really even need a reason for a fight. It doesn't bother him that Sookie hates him half the time. There's a fine line between love and hate. Fighting is the most fun a Viking vampire boy can have behind that other F word.
Despite his love of fighting, he’s practical and can be very democratic. When the Vampire Human Alliance need a poster vampire, they try to use Pam. After several takes in which she can’t manage to put on a good act, Eric steps into the role and nails it in one take. He is everything they could want him to be: charming, handsome, funny and somehow approachable. Eric is all of these things because it’s what required in order to get the sort of life he desires. It’s all about survival and what he has to do in order to survive. Alliances, loves, and ideology are all up for grabs in this regard.
Eric has a sense of humor. Not all vampires do. It's dry and often at someone else's expense. He is vain. Eric knows how good-looking he is. He does not appreciate things that don't do his appearance justice. He highlights his hair because even naturally blond hair goes a bit dark when one can’t step out into the sun and it was once quite long. Now it's shorter and he still highlights it (or technically Pam does). He is also a manipulative bastard. This goes along with his desire for power and survival instinct. He doesn't mind (in fact sometimes it's fun) exploiting others weaknesses for his own gain.
He is stubborn and he sticks to his own set of rules even when abiding by others rules would be easier. For example, most recently in S5 he is offered a position with an organization that would make his life easier. He sticks to his guns and says he believes in mainstreaming with the public. Even when he eventually goes to the cult that worships Lilith (and ultimately wants to kill most humans) it’s only a means of survival until he can (and does) kill everyone in charge. Part of this is pure pig-headed stubbornness. Part of it is that Eric has done the slaughtering all humans thing. It's boring. The other way has potential for interest, not to mention it's something new. He likes that it's something he hasn't seen yet. There are very few beings that Eric thinks are worthy of setting rules for him, therefore living by his own rules is preferable.
Eric is a natural leader. As a human he was the son of a Viking chief and most likely raised to rule people one day. As a vampire, he's very commanding and expects to be obeyed when he gives commands. He is often the one to take control of a situation whether he's appointed the one in charge or not. While he likes being in control, he doesn't have to control all the details. He's more than happy to leave the dirty work to others that he trusts.
There is even a side of Eric that can be incredibly sweet and vulnerable. The only time this is ever seen is in relation to Nora (his sister), Willa (his newest child) and Sookie, particularly when he was without his memories. We know that this is a part of him that exists beneath everything else because when he regained his memories, he tells Sookie that he is still that man underneath. It is a side that only someone he is deeply committed to and in love with would ever see because the other parts of Eric recognize how vulnerable and weak it makes him. It is also not a part of him that is seen often, even around Sookie. He enjoys the spark of fighting with Sookie far too much to ever be that all the time.

Abilities, Strengths and Weaknesses:
In True Blood, vampires are vastly stronger and faster than humans. Their power increases with age. The young vampires are weak in comparison to the older vampires. The old vampires are nearly impossible to kill without special weapons or by another vampire of equal or superior age. Bill was shown to be able to turn over a mobile home, break full grown trees and convincingly make the area look like it had been hit by a tornado and he's not even that old (he was human during the Civil War). They are able to move so fast on the ground that they blur. Literally they can move faster than the human eye can see. Of course they're immortal. They heal instantly. This season Jessica is shot in the -head- with some sort of high caliber hand gun (police issue) and she whirls around to bitch at the person who did it, already healing. Again, she's just been a vampire a few years. In book canon, a very old vampire loses her arm in a battle. She's able to 'heal' that by having someone else hold her arm up to her shoulder where it would normally attach. Within several minutes her arm was whole again. They don't grow limbs though from the looks of things. They have a power called glamor that works like a traditional glamor. They can convince a human to do just about anything depending on how old they are/how weak willed the human is. They can also erase memories or alter them with this power. They've also got super senses. Their vision at night is just as excellent as it is in the daytime. Eric was able to see a bullet in apparent slow motion when he running at blur speed and he appeared to be moving at normal speed (so that sort of tells you how fast they can move and how well they can see?). Of course they've got the hearing and smell that goes with that. They smell blood, other scents and can pick a scent out if they know it (like say a particular human or vampire or just distinguish humans were here, wolves were here, etc) Eric happens to have the ability to fly, yes like Superman, though probably not as quickly or as high. It still gets him where he's going very fast. This is not a power that all vampires have, but having it does have something to do with being old. Canon is never terribly -clear- on this. Eric would have everyone believe he is special, but thta's just Eric being Eric. It's possible that when a vampire is over a thousand, they can all fly. Most vampires just don't reach this age. Godric (Eric's maker) was never shown to fly that I know of.
A vampire's blood has it's own abilities in canon. The most important being that it heals, not all wounds but very grievous wounds that a human would die of otherwise. Ingesting enough blood from one vampire will create a blood bond. This fades unless the human ingests a good deal of blood from the same vampire multiple times. Through this blood bond the vampire and human share emotions as well as an awareness of each other regardless of the physical distance between them. This does not apply to humans or vampires who have been transported to other realms. For example, when Sookie is taken to fairy land, Eric knows something has happened because he no longer feels that bond. He thinks she's dead initially. Eric and Sookie share this bond.
Vampire blood is something that humans can also become addicted to. It's hallucinogenic
True Blood vampires also have weaknesses. Silver will weaken them greatly and eventually kill them if they're exposed to it long enough. How long they have to be exposed to it depends on how old the vampire is. They can be killed with a wooden stake through the heart. They can be killed in a fire and they can be decapitated. They can also be killed via exsanguination (completely draining their blood). They have to ask to be invited into a home and the homeowner can revoke that invitation. They don't need an invitation to public places. They can also get something called the bleeds (just what it sounds like) from not sleeping during the day or not feeding. They can die from blood loss this way.
They're just as vulnerable to magic as any other being. They're even more vulnerable to necromancy. Witches are not among their favorite people.
When Eric truly cares about someone (like Pam, Nora, Godric or Sookie) those people can be used to manipulate him. It’s another reason he doesn’t care often.

Vampires or politicians? Just for fun.
[There is an absolutely charming, handsome man on the screen. He smiles , giving it a moment before he introduces himself. ] Good evening. I’m Eric Northman and I’m new to this little…experiment, but I’m certain it’s a pleasure to meet you all. It’s my understanding that some of you have been here for some time. If you’d be willing to share what information you may have about this place, it would be most appreciated. Perhaps we can meet at the tavern and have a drink. I’ll be there tonight for anyone that’s interested
Prose Log Sample:
It’s not the first hellhole that Eric has been in. It’s not even the first experiment that Eric has been in (and he’s certain that’s what it is), but it is his first apocalyptic setting with cellphone service. If he could forget that this is some sort of sick experiment with scientists peering over their shoulders then this place might not be so bad. There are plenty of things to kill, plenty of people to compel. He’s certainly been in worse spots. He does miss a shower but whatever this place is makes up for it by allowing him in the sunlight. Some days he thinks he hallucinated catching on fire that day up in the mountains; some days he thinks that it’s still Lilith’s blood that allows him out in the sun, but there is a part of him that knows better. He would feel Lilith in his veins and she’s entirely absent along with that urge that’s not his to destroy and slaughter for no reason except the joy (not his either) of destruction.
Of course, he can’t forget that this is a science experiment because Pam is not here; Willa is not here and he has no fucking control over anything here and that’s driving him a little crazy, which brings him back to being grateful about the number of creatures to kill. The biggest challenge this place affords him is holding onto his humanity. As far as he can tell, even the humans here have a bit of a difficult time holding onto that. Maybe that’s the point of the experiment: put people in inhuman conditions and see how long it takes them to revert to animals. Eric could assure them that it won’t be long and all of this is a bit over the top.
